Weighing the Costs...
If you're stuck with a piece of weighing, measuring or testing equipment in need of repair and are not sure whether to repair it or replace it, you should really ask yourself these three (3) questions:
Question 1 - Is my piece of equipment still in production?
If your equipment is no longer being manufactured then it could become increasingly difficult, as well as expensive, to get parts for or work on. Newer equipment may also provide important improvements that could be worth the upgrade.
Question 2 - Is the cost of repairs more than 60% of the value of the equipment?
If so, Aldinger would usually suggest purchasing new equipment rather than spending money on older, outdated, equipment. Specialized or customized equipment might be an exception in certain situations.
Question 3 - How long until you expect the equipment to fail or break again?
Even if it's less than 60% of the value of the equipment, the cost of repairing old, worn down equipment may still not be worth the temporary gain. Many small repairs over a short period of time can quickly add up. Furthermore, warranty on repairs is only 90 days as opposed to a manufacturer’s warranty that lasts 1-2 years or more. The cost savings of warranty repairs could make purchasing new equipment the more economical decision.
